The Witcher 3: Enable Debug Console on PC

Merry Christmas to my fellow PC gamers! This is my favorite time of year to play video games, and lately I’ve been enjoying a new playthrough of The Witcher 3 now that the next-gen update has been released.

Just like the older version of this game, the developer/debug console is not available by default in The Witcher 3, which I’ve always found unusual. I’d forgotten how to enable it since my last playthrough of this game, so I did some research and put together a quick tutorial for myself and others.

I typically don’t use cheats while gaming, but I like to have that option if I’m stuck on a tough level. And besides, being able to install mods and run console commands is part of the fun of PC gaming.

Enabling the developer console is no different than with the original version of the game. It simply involves editing one of the game’s configuration files, and is much easier than it sounds. I’m using the Steam version of this game, but it works on any other version of The Witcher 3 (you will just have to manually locate your game folder in that case).

If you are using Steam, go to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in your Library, click on the gear icon (settings), select Properties > Local Files > Browse. (If you are not using Steam, navigate to your game folder in File Explorer.)

Now navigate to the \bin\config\base folder and right-click on the general.ini file, then open it with Notepad.

Add a new line at the bottom and paste in the following:

DBGConsoleOn=true

Save with Ctrl + S, then exit out of everything and launch The Witcher 3.

Now you can simply press the tilde key (~) to pull up the debug console like you would in many other PC games.

I won’t list all of the console commands here, but here are a few I’ve found to be useful in the past:

god — toggles “god mode” on or off.

addmoney(amount) — Adds a specific number of Crowns to Geralt’s purse. ex: addmoney(10000)

healme — restores health bar. Enabling “god mode” mid-fight does not restore health.

levelup — Raises Geralt’s level by one.

setlevel(level) — Sets character’s level to a specified number.

addkeys — Gives you every single key in the game. Open any door!

Cat(0/1) — Activates (1) or deactivates (0) night vision.

Drunk(0/1) — Makes Geralt drunk (1) or sober (0).
